Creating a custom live edge table is a labor-intensive process that requires patience, skill, and a deep understanding of the material. It all starts with sourcing the right log. We carefully select locally sourced timber, often rescuing trees that have fallen naturally or need to be removed for safety reasons.
Once the log is at our shop, it is milled into slabs. This is a critical step, as the way the log is cut determines the grain pattern and edge profile of each slab. After milling, the slabs must be properly dried. We use a combination of air drying and kiln drying to bring the wood down to the optimal moisture content, ensuring it will be stable and resist warping once brought into a home.
Finally, the crafting begins. Slabs are flattened, sanded, and carefully shaped. Any voids or cracks are filled with epoxy resin, which can be clear to highlight the natural flaw or tinted for a bold, modern look. The piece is then finished with multiple coats of protective sealant, resulting in a stunning, functional work of art.
